Brief description of the activity and the Organization?s role

In conjunction with the University of Mataram, BICG member Luki Prang (resident in Lombok for more than five years), initiated and developed an Indonesian language & culture program in NTB. The objective of this ongoing program is to provide tourists and other visitors with first-hand experience of arts and craft in local rural communities and at the same time to provide local communities other sources of income and to capacity build. Training in guiding, selling and teaching basic craft skills to visitors was provide, and assistance given in basic business management. Other benefits of the program have been to create an awareness of how economic gains can be made from other sources than traditional agriculture and subsistence activities. Since many of those producing arts and crafts in this area are women it has also empowers this marginalized group. Those trained as guides for the program have also been given English language classes to enhance their interactions with tour visitors. This project is ongoing.

Brief description of activity outcomes

NTB communities involved in this language and cultural program have continued to be highly motivated to participate and have developed an understanding and appreciation of environmental protection and sustainable development. They also have greater awareness of the potential of eco-tourism in isolated areas. It is hoped that this program can be expanded to nearby communities and that locals from the initial program can help develop another arts and craft tour site.
